Yes, we definitely all admire those who go for it and ignore the safety first mantra. I think especially so now in our technocratic controlled era. Society is also more feminized too, so security is top of the agenda.

But real daring is always admired. We see an element of ourselves in these heroes. Perhaps it reminds us who we could be if we just let go and tried ourselves.

VERY well-written! I have the movie in my queue! Looks like I gotta cue it up! Maybe “before bed tonight!”

I just rewatched Ford v Ferrari last weekend too. What a great movie! It’s on my ‘let’s watch a movie before bed’ list.

If you’re in to movies about races, you should watch The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young. I found it an awe-inspiring display of human capacity.

I’m well beyond the age where I think I’ll live forever, or even that it can’t happen to me, but I still love pointing my skis down a steep groomer and just opening up! That feeling of being right at the edge, that my very best is required to not bungle this, is just the tops.

I think we admire racers because we want to glimpse the edge, even vicariously, to be reminded of what we really are: wild animals.

Excellent article. I think you are right, this is part of our make up. I could not help but think of one of my kids who considers everything to be a competition; and who will go to great lengths to be the winner!
